A Brush, a Heartbeat.

My work begins before the brush touches the canvas.

It starts in a feeling—a shift in light, a rhythm in the air, something subtle that lingers. A kind of quiet pulse. Painting, for me, is a way of following that. Of translating something internal into something visible.

Most pieces are created instinctively. I respond—to colour, to sound, to movement, to what feels right in the moment. Some works come through quickly, almost all at once. Others build slowly, layer by layer, until they settle into themselves.

Colour, light and darkness is at the centre of everything I do. It carries emotion, energy, memory. It’s what draws you in before you even realise why.

Living and creating in regional Australia has shaped this process in ways I don’t always see straight away. The openness, the stillness, the intensity of light—it all finds its way into the work. Even in abstraction, there’s always a sense of place.

A brushstroke, to me, is like a heartbeat—continuous, instinctive. Alone it might feel simple, but together they create something alive.

This is not about perfection.
It’s about presence.
About creating work that feels—quietly, honestly, and without effort.

And if it resonates with you, then the connection is complete. Olivia xx
